Research Question

As an artist and an academic I have always had an interest in the relationship between humans and the built environment. Since moving to the Netherlands in the summer of 2016 I have been researching the unique geopolitics of the Benelux region, in particular its complex borders and the long history of urban planning around them. I am struck by the prevalence of international settlements – cities and towns divided between nations by invisible boarders. In an increasingly fortified, fearful world, these settlements present me with globally unique scenes of cooperation and exchange that I have set out to capture.
